The speed of light is much faster than the speed of sound. Light travels at about 299,792 kilometers per second in a vacuum, while sound moves at around 343 meters per second in air at room temperature. This large difference occurs because light is an electromagnetic wave that does not require a medium to travel, whereas sound is a mechanical wave that depends on vibrations through a medium like air, water, or solids. As a result, we often see events such as lightning before we hear the associated sound like thunder.
