Her family includes several members who are notable in politics and academia. They were the second family of the United States from 2021 to 2025 during Harris' vice presidency under Joe Biden. Harris's maternal ancestry comes from Tamil Nadu, India. Her paternal ancestry comes from Saint Ann, Jamaica. She is married to American entertainment attorney and law professor Douglas Emhoff.
