Nathan Bedford Forrest was an American slave trader, active in the lower Mississippi River valley, who served as a Confederate States Army general during the American Civil War. Forrest was elected to lead the post-Civil War Reconstruction-era Ku Klux Klan as its first and only Grand Wizard, though not a founding member, serving almost two years from the 1867 inception of his title, until calling for dissolution of the organization in January 1869.
